Why you should watch Mutiny, the new Channel 4 show everyone is talking about…

If you've been hanging around social media recently you may have heard about the gripping new series Mutiny. This series has taken reality TV to the next level putting the participants through grueling survival skills whilst offering fascinating history lessons.

The series has been billed as one of the toughest reality shows EVER. It makes Bear Grylls ‘The Island’ look not that bad! This show is fronted by SAS ‘Who Dares Wins’ Ant Middleton, and follows the progress of a group of men attempting to recreate the voyage made by William Bligh and a group of 18 loyalists in 1789, when they sailed 3,600 miles in a 23ft long ship.

The famous voyage known as the "Mutiny On The Bounty", happened after nine mutinous sailors on the Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty set Bligh and the others adrift in a smaller boat in the South Pacific, expecting them to die. Amazingly the sailors survived the odds and ended up sailing their way to Timor, losing only one crew member along the way.

When they say ‘recreate’, they really meant it. The crew were restricted to the same rations that Bligh and his men had for their 48-day voyage, which included 16 2lb pieces of salt pork and 28 gallons of water.

Unsurprisingly, the crew lost a tremendous amount of weight along the way, Middleton admitted to shedding 3 stone while making the show.

‘I knew how hard it was going to be so I put on an extra ten kilograms to my normal 85kg weight before setting off’ he told the Radio Times. ‘I lost all of that and 11kg of my own natural body weight – so 21kgs in total’. That shows how tough the challenge was.

Middleton wasn’t the only one to have drastic weight loss; the ship’s doctor Luke Kane lost four stone during the four-week voyage as well.

As well as fighting hunger, the crew also had to battle extreme weather conditions, sleep deprivation and the main challenge of just being on a tiny boat in the middle of the ocean. This makes the likes of I’m A Celebrity look super easy…
