Best Alternative Weekend Breaks in the UK
Planning a quick getaway for the upcoming summer? Maybe you fancy going somewhere new that you haven't thought of before. We have put together some alternative British holiday destinations for you that are guaranteed to not disappoint.
Peak District
Located in Derbyshire the Peak District is a great place to spend the weekend exploring. There is plenty to see and do with a walk around Chatsworth House, a trip to Pooles Cavern or a wander around the quaint town of Matlock.
Forest of Dean
Not far from Gloucester, the Forest of Dean is packed full of activities and entertainment. For adventure seekers there are mountain bikes, cycle tracks, zip wires and Kayaking. For the explorers there is a great range of attractions, from the Puzzlewood to caves and steam trains. And if you fancy something more relaxing enjoy the sculpture trail, many walks and spectacular views. There's something for everyone!
Durham
Rolling into Durham after a long journey from Kings Cross is as close as you can get to experiencing the journey made by Harry Potter to get to Hogwarts. The centre has a distinctly cut-off feel to it with an atmosphere very similar to Cambridge thanks to its student population. Durham is great for a low-stress city break in the far north - charming buildings, winding café lined streets and circular river walks.
Brighton
Brighton is as good as the British seaside gets. Take a sunny stroll along the pier, ice cream in hand, makes for an idyllic day. Follow up with exploring in the Lanes where you will find plenty of quirky clothing boutiques and coffee shops.
Lincoln
It may be small, but Lincoln has a lot to offer. A great place to begin exploring is the eleventh-century castle, where you can climb the walls for a panoramic view of the city. Just across the cobbled square from here is the Lincoln Cathedral, one of the most spectacular pieces of Gothic architecture in Europe. Make your way down Steep Hill into town and pop in and out of the many boutique shops and rickety pubs that line the streets.
The Gower Peninsula
Located on the coast of Wales and just a short drive from Swansea, The Gower Peninsula is a combination of beaches and ruined medieval castles. Make sure you take a walk from Rhossili to Worm’s Head, but check the tide before braving the climb across, the Atlantic current will always be quicker then you think! From wild moors and limestone cliffs to golden, sandy beaches, Gower will not disappoint. It's the perfect escape from the busy life of a city.
Robin Hood’s Bay
Robin Hood’s Bay is a quaint fishing village and bay located in the North York moors. Stay in a beautiful holiday cottage and take in the stunning views of the bay. For a day out, Scarborough is only 15 miles away and Whitby just five. This a great stress-free getaway for anyone who loves unusual architecture and breathtaking scenery.
Glasgow
Glasgow is a great place for shopping and restaurants if you 're looking for a livelier city break. Everything is tightly packed into just a few streets about a 20-minute walk from each other. Glasgow has a considerable number of students which means there is a great nightlife for those looking to let their hair down, however there are a number of historical buildings and museums to take a look around too.
