A Series of Unfortunate Events
If you read the Series of Unfortunate Events books when you were younger, you're going to love watching the series. The 13 novels by Lemony Snicket follows the turbulent lives of Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire after their parents' death in a fire. They go to live with their murderous relative, Count Olaf (played by Niel Patrik Harris) and proceed to uncover a secret society linked to their family. It's definitely worth a watch to bring out your inner child.
Frontier
Set in 18th-century North America, Frontier has been described as gritty, violent and dark. The plot follows the ruthless Declan Harp, part Irish outlaw, who is fighting to wrestle control of the fur trade in Canada from the mighty Hudson’s Bay Company. The reviews have been very good and a second series already commissioned, so it's definitely worth a watch.
Journey to Greenland
This film has been described as ‘understated’, but it's still packed full of adventure. The story follows two struggling actors who leave Paris for Greenland in a bittersweet French-language comedy. Expect offbeat humour and beautiful frozen scenery. The pair become immersed in the Greenland culture and forge unexpected bonds.
The Crown
Intriguing and gripping, if you like a period drama then The Crown has to be on your watch list. It follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, as well as the major events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Claire Foy, John Lithgow and Matt Smith bring it all to life.
Stranger Things
This is the show that everyone's talking about, so if you haven’t watched it yet, cancel your plans until you have. It's been described as "scary" and "ominous", and it's generally received rave reviews. A young boy vanishes and a small town rgadually uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.
Defenders
The Marvel fans will already be aware of this new series coming soon. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron first and Luke Cage come together as The Defenders, an epic team of superheroes set to save New York. It's due to be released this summer if you can wait that long!
Santa Clarita Diet
The highly anticipated Santa Clarita Diet stars Drew Barrymore in a new gruesome and disturbing series. The plot follows an ordinary husband and wife when things take a dark turn as the wife develops a taste for human flesh. Definitely not your average suburban life TV show.
Bloodline
If you like suspense and a dark story then this is right up your street. Sibling loyalties are put to the test when the black sheep son of a respected family threatens to expose dark secrets from their past. It's had great reviews, so add it to your watch list.
The Ranch
Debuting in 2016, The Ranch is an American comedy series starring Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson and Debra Winger. Failed Athlete Colt is helping his brother and father keep their ranch afloat whilst figuring out how he fits into the family. Written by the former writer of Two and a Half Men, the series exceeded critics expectations.
Homeland
Another show full of suspense and gripping scenes, this is a must see for all thrill seekers. CIA analyst Carrie Mathison struggles with mental health and family issues while leading the war against terrorism in this political, action packed series. The show was released in 2015 but is currently showing season 6 on channel 4 too.
